6 Taiwanese firefighters die in bowling alley blaze

TAOYUAN, TAIWAN (BNO NEWS) -- Six firefighters were killed Tuesday when a roof collapsed on them while they were rescuing two brothers from a burning bowling alley in northern Taiwan, the state-run CNA news agency reported. Both brothers were taken to hospital but survived.

The incident happened just after 2 a.m. local time when firefighters in the northern city of Taoyuan responded to a 119 emergency call of a fire with people trapped in a building housing both people and a bowling alley. The bowling alley was closed at the time, but several people were inside the building when the fire broke out, the Central News Agency reported.

Fire officials said six firefighters were killed when a burning roof collapsed on them while they were rescuing two brothers, who both survived and were taken to hospital for unknown injuries. There were no reports of other casualties from the fire, which broke out in an electrical transformer box on the second floor.
