STORM UPDATE: 5,000 Tuesday flights canceled due to winter storm; almost no power outages

NEW YORK CITY (BNO NEWS) -- The extreme winter weather system that continues to batter parts of the U.S. northeast, bringing heavy snowfall and winds, has prompted thousands of cancellations at airports across the country.

Nationwide there were a total of 5,012 flight cancellations for Tuesday flights, according to data from flight-tracking website FlightAware at 10:45 a.m. ET.

New York's LaGuardia airport led with the most number of canceled flights, 1,056, followed by Newark Liberty International Airport with 934 cancellations.

Below is a list of flight cancellations, as reported by FlightAware:

  • LaGuardia : 1,056
  • Newark Liberty International: 934
  • Philadelphia International: 873
  • John F. Kennedy International: 771
  • Boston Airport: 675
  • Chicago O’Hare: 283
  • D.C. Reagan National: 230
  • Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International: 171

Only a small number of power outages were reported, including 21 by PSEG and 52 by Con Ed.
