Egypt closes embassy in Yemen amid deteriorating security situation

The Egyptian Embassy in Sana'a has been closed due to the deteriorating security situation in Yemen, where Houthi rebels seized control of the government after the president and his cabinet resigned en masse, Egypt's state-run MENA news agency reported on Monday.

Ambassador Youssef el Sharqawi and other staff members of Egypt's embassy in Sana'a departed Yemen over the weekend and arrived back to Egypt on Monday, MENA said in a brief news report. It cited the worsening security situation in Yemen as the reason for the closure.

Other countries, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands, closed their embassies in Yemen earlier this month.
