[UPDATE] Semi-truck strikes pedestrians on Chicago street: 3 dead

A woman and two young children were killed Friday afternoon when they were struck by a semi-truck on a street on Chicago’s South Side, police said.

The accident happened at about 4:54 p.m. CT at 43rd and Ashland Avenue.

“Officers responded to a traffic crash at that location. Three pedestrians were struck by a semi-truck,” a police spokesman said. “Two juveniles were taken to Mt. Sinai, one adult was taken to [John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital]. All in critical condition.”

A police spokeswoman later confirmed that all three victims - a woman, a boy and a girl - had died of their injuries. Their identities were not immediately known. A law enforcement source said both children were under the age of 10.

Police said the driver remained at the scene of the accident but provided no further details about what may have caused it. “Tickets are pending, and then if there are any further charges, that will be for our major accidents unit,” the spokeswoman said.

The 18-wheeler was operated by Iowa-based company Monson and Sons.
