[OFFICIAL] Boko Haram leader announces allegiance to ISIS, pledges to obey

Abubakar Shekau, the leader of the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram, has pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS) group in a video released on Saturday, referring to Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as the "Caliph of Muslims" and vowing to hear and obey him.

"We announce our allegiance to the Caliph of the Muslims, Ibrahim ibn Awad ibn Ibrahim al-Husseini al-Qurashi, and will hear and obey in times of difficulty and prosperity, in hardship and ease, and not to dispute about rule with those in power," Abubakar Shekau said in the 8-minute video, which carried only audio of Shekau.

The Boko Haram, which declared a caliphate last year in areas it controls in northeastern Nigeria, is seeking the imposition of an extremist stance of the Shariah law, which is a Muslim code of conduct. The group's name, in the local language of Hausa, roughly translates as Western religion is sacrilegious' or 'non-Islamic religion is a sin.'
