[UPDATE] Magnitude-6.6 earthquake strikes eastern Indonesia, no tsunami threat – seismologists

A strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Molucca Sea off the island of Sulawesi in eastern Indonesia on early Wednesday morning, seismologists said, but no tsunami alerts were issued. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The 6.6-magnitude earthquake at 6:12 a.m. local time (2212 GMT Tuesday) was centered in the Molucca Sea, east of Manado on the island of Sulawesi. It struck about 53 kilometers (32.9 miles) deep, making it a relatively shallow earthquake, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Indonesia's seismological agency BMKG, which measured the earthquake at a 6.2, said there was no threat of a tsunami.
