Church ceiling collapses during Easter service in New Jersey, injuring at least 12

RAHWAY, NEW JERSEY (BNO NEWS) -- A dozen people were injured Sunday afternoon when a roof came down during an Easter service at a church in New Jersey, county officials said, though a local media report said as many as fifteen people were hurt. One of those injured was in a critical condition.

The accident happened just before 2 p.m. local time when a roof collapsed at the Korean Union United Methodist Church in Rahway, a city in New Jersey about 16 miles (25.7 kilometers) southwest of New York City. Dozens of people were gathered at the church for Easter Sunday services.

"Total of 12 patients. One critical to University Hospital, eleven to Rahway Hospital. No other injuries reported," said Union County spokesman Sebastian Delia. NJ Advance Media, however, put the total number of injured at 15, citing a Rahway Hospital spokeswoman who said the hospital had received fourteen patients.

Emergency services are conducting an assessment of the structure, Delia added.
