International operation takes down major hacking forum, 28 arrested

An operation led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in co-operation with 20 international law enforcement agencies, has dismantled a major computer hacking forum known as Darkode, resulting in the arrests of 28 people, U.S. and European officials say. Authorities considered Darkode to be the “most sophisticated” English-speaking forum for criminal computer hackers in the world.

“Of the roughly 800 criminal internet forums worldwide, Darkode represented one of the gravest threats to the integrity of data on computers in the United States and around the world and was the most sophisticated English-speaking forum for criminal computer hackers in the world,” said U.S. Attorney David Hickton of the Western District of Pennsylvania. “Through this operation, we have dismantled a cyber hornets’ nest of criminal hackers which was believed by many, including the hackers themselves, to be impenetrable.”
