Former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam dead at 83

Former Indian President APJ Abdul Kalam, who is widely regarded as the father of the country's missile program, has unexpectedly died in northeastern India at the age of 83.

"India mourns the loss of a great scientist, a wonderful President and above all an inspiring individual," Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi said in a statement.

Kalam died from cardiac arrest at a hospital in the northeastern city of Shillong, where he had traveled on Monday to take part in a "Livable Planet Earth" course. He was rushed to hospital after collapsing during the event.

Writing on Twitter, Home Affairs Minister Rajnath Singh called Kalam's death an "irreparable loss to this nation," adding: "He has left a big void hard to fill. I deeply mourn his death."
