Bin Laden’s sister and stepmother die in UK plane crash

The sister and stepmother of the late al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden were killed Friday when a Saudi business jet crashed at Blackbushe Airport in southern England, reports said.

The accident happened just after 3 p.m. local time when the Embraer Phenom 300 aircraft, which was owned by the Bin Laden family, crashed at a car auction at the airport, causing a large fire that sent thick clouds of black smoke billowing into the air. All four people on board the aircraft, including the pilot, were killed.

Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the UK, Mohammed bin Nawwaf bin Abdulaziz, confirmed that members of the Bin Laden family were killed in the crash. NBC News, citing a family friend, identified the victims as Rajaa Hashim, Osama bin Laden's stepmother, Sana bin Laden, Osama bin Laden's half-sister, and her husband, Zuhair Hashim. The pilot is not believed to have been part of the family.

The UK's Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) will investigate the cause of the crash.
