Syrian warplane crashes into market, killing at least 25

At least 25 people were killed on Monday when an army fighter jet on a bombing run crashed into a busy market place in northwestern Syria, activist monitors said. Many more were injured.

The accident happened in the rebel-held town of Ariha in Idlib province, killing at least 25 civilians and injuring more than 60 others. The pro-rebel monitoring group AlDorar AlShamia said the aircraft went down on its own after an apparent technical issue, indicating that it had not been fired upon.

The status of the pilot was unclear, and Syrian state media did not immediately report on the incident. Footage posted online showed heavily damaged buildings in the area with apparent pieces of an aircraft among the rubble.
