1-year-old Missouri boy dies after finding gun, shooting self

A 21-month-old Missouri boy has died after finding a loaded handgun at his home and shooting himself, police say.

The shooting happened at about 1 p.m. local time on Tuesday at a residence in Hanley Hills, a village just south of Ferguson, according to Shawn McGuire, a spokesman for the St. Louis County Police Department. "At this point in the investigation, Crimes Against Persons detectives believe this was an accidental shooting," McGuire said.

"After a thorough investigation, Detectives believe the victim picked up a loaded handgun and shot himself," the spokesman added. The child, whose identity has not yet been released, was rushed to St. Mary's hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

McGuire said one arrest has been made in connection with the shooting, but he declined to provide further details until the case is presented to the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office on Wednesday.
