4 dead, 3 injured shooting at Roma camp in northern France

Four people were killed Tuesday, including a police officer, and three others were seriously injured in a shootout at a Roma camp in northern France, officials said.

The incident happened at about 4:30 p.m. local time when officers responded to reports of shots being fired at a Roma camp in Roye, located in the northern region of Picardy, not far from the border with Belgium. The officers came under fire as they arrived at the scene, resulting in a shootout that seriously injured two police officers and the suspect.

After the shootout, police found the bodies of a man, a woman and an infant. One of the officers later died of his injuries, raising the death toll to four. Three people who were injured, including the second police officer and a child, were said to have been seriously injured.

"The President of the Republic wishes to salute the courage and commitment of the police forces," the office of French President Fran├žois Hollande said in a statement. "The Head of State expressed his solidarity with the families of the victims and their loved ones," it added.

The motive is believed to be a dispute and there is no link to terrorism.
