2 American troops among dead in Kabul helicopter crash

Two American service members and a French worker are among the five people who were killed in Sunday's helicopter crash near Kabul, officials say.

"We're deeply saddened by the loss of our teammates. On behalf of General Campbell and the entire Resolute Support team, our heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of those affected in this tragic incident and we pray for the full recovery of those injured," said Brig. Gen. Wilson A. Shoffner, the deputy chief of staff for communications at the U.S.-led Resolute Support force.

The British Ministry of Defense previously confirmed the deaths of 2 British service members, but the nationalities of the other three casualties had not yet been disclosed. The nationalities of five people who were injured in the crash have not been released.

The accident happened at about 4:15 p.m. local time on Sunday when the aircraft crashed as it attempted to land at Camp Resolute Support near Kabul. A witness told the AP news agency that the helicopter appeared to have struck an observational balloon, causing the balloon's cable to turn around the aircraft's rotor.
