Iran’s ballistic missile test may have violated UN resolution – White House

Iran’s test of a new surface-to-surface ballistic missile may have violated a United Nations Security Council resolution that pertains to Iran’s ballistic missile program, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said on Tuesday.

“We’ve got strong indications that those missile tests did violate a UN Security Council resolution that pertains to Iran’s ballistic missile activities,” Earnest said at Tuesday’s press briefing. “Unfortunately that is not new. We have seen Iran almost serially violate the international community’s concerns about their ballistic missile program.”

Earnest, however, emphasized that the issue is unrelated to the nuclear deal reached earlier this year between Iran and world powers.

“This is altogether separate from the nuclear agreement that Iran reached with the rest of the world,” the spokesman said. “In contrast to the repeated violations of the UN Security Council resolution that pertains to their ballistic missile activities, we’ve seen that Iran over the past couple of years has demonstrated a track record of abiding by the commitments that they made in the context of the nuclear talks.”
