3 people shot at Washington Square Mall in Indianapolis

Three people have been shot at the Washington Square Mall in Indianapolis, Indiana, but the shooting does not appear to have been a random act of violence, police say.

The incident happened at about 6:29 p.m. when gunshots were fired in a common area of the mall, which is located on the city's far east side.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department rushed to the scene after receiving numerous 911 calls of shots being fired and located three victims. One of the victims, a male, suffered serious but non life-threatening injuries and was taken to Methodist Hospital, while a second man and a woman were taken to Eskenazi Health with non life-threatening injuries.

One witness told IndyStar reporter Michael Anthony Adams that she was in Target when the gunshots erupted. She took shelter in a fitting room and called 911.

"Based on information gathered in the initial stages of this investigation, investigators believe an altercation took place between the suspected shooter and one of the male victims when shots were fired," police said in a statement. "Investigators believe one of the male victims was the intended target and the two remaining victims may have been innocent bystanders. This incident does not appear to be a random shooting."

The shooter remains at large and no suspect information has been released.
