Number of asylum seekers in Germany reaches record 1 million this year

The number of immigrants who have entered Germany this year and registered themselves as asylum seekers has surpassed 1 million, including more than 200,000 who entered the country last month alone.

“From January until today, a million asylum seekers have registered in the initial reception centers of the federal states through the so-called EASY-System and were then accommodated,” said Emilia Müller, the minister of social affairs in the German state of Bavaria, referring to the system that distributes asylum seekers across the country.

“In November alone there were more than 200,000 newly-registered asylum seekers. We urgently need a cap on the admission of refugees, because Germany can no longer shoulder these arrivals,” Müller added in a statement.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière had estimated earlier this year that Germany could expect some 300,000 asylum seekers, but he later raised that figure to 450,000 and then 800,000 in August. Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel acknowledged in October that the 800,000 figure was probably too low as well.

According to Frontex, the European Union agency that manages the region’s external border, more than 710,000 migrants entered the European Union in the first 9 months of this year. Updated figures have not yet been released.
