300 arrested on last day of ‘Democracy Spring’ protests at U.S Capitol

Another 300 demonstrators were arrested at the steps of the U.S Capitol on Monday on the last day of demonstrations calling for reforms on campaign finance laws, raising the number of arrests over the past week to more than 1,200.

The demonstrations on the East Front Rotunda Steps of the U.S. Capitol were led by a group of people calling themselves “Democracy Spring.” The group is protesting the influence of money in politics and is calling for bills to reform campaign finance laws and to modernize voter registration.

In an emailed statement, U.S. Capitol Police said that those arrested were charged under the D.C Code for “crowding, obstructing, or incommoding.” Those arrested on Monday were processed at the scene before being released.

About 1,240 arrests have been made by U.S. Capitol Police since the protests began a week ago, and Monday’s demonstration marked the final day of protests. The group was also joined on Saturday by another group - “Democracy Awakening” - to protest laws they see as discriminatory.
