Bike lane collapses in Rio de Janeiro, killing at least 2 people

At least two people have been killed after an elevated bike lane created as part of improvements ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro collapsed into the ocean, Brazilian officials say. It is unclear if anyone else is still missing.

A video posted online showed that a 50-meter-long section of the lane collapsed when it was hit by a large wave. Two bodies had been recovered by Thursday night and three were rescued, but at least one other person is thought to remain unaccounted-for.

Search operations were halted at sunset and are expected to resume on Friday morning.

The bike lane opened in January and was created as part of a series of projects to improve the city ahead of the Olympics. Thursday's accident happened only hours after the Olympic flame was lit at an ancient site in Greece.
