Actor and director Garry Marshall dead at 82

Actor and director Garry Marshall, who is best remembered as the creator of "Happy Days" and the director of "Pretty Woman", has died after suffering a stroke, his publicist says. He was 82 years old.

Marshall died at a hospital in Burbank, California, at about 5 p.m. PT on Tuesday. He passed away from complications of pneumonia following a stroke he recently suffered, according to a statement from his publicist.

Marshall is survived by his wife of 53 years, Barbara Marshall, and three children; Lori, Kathleen and Scott. Funeral services will be private, the family said, though a memorial is planned for his birthday on November 13.

"He loved telling stories, making people laugh, and playing softball, winning numerous championships," the statement said.

Marshall, who was born in New York City in November 1934, began his career as a joke writer before joining the crew of The Tonight Show with Jack Paar. He went on to create the popular TV sitcom "Happy Days" that ran from 1974 through 1984.

Years later, Marshall directed the romantic comedy "Pretty Woman" starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts.
