7 stabbed during house party in Sydney suburb of Ryde

A teenager has been killed and six others have been injured after a mass stabbing during a birthday party in the Sydney suburb of Ryde, police in Australia say. No arrests were immediately made.

The incident happened just after midnight local time on Sunday when officers were called to an altercation involving several people at a house on Victoria Road in Ryde, which is about 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) northwest of Sydney's commercial center.

The stabbings happened when an 18th birthday party was taking place at the residence.

New South Wales Police said a total of seven people - six males and one female - sustained stab wounds and were taken to local hospitals. A 16-year-old boy was rushed to Westmead Hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries.

Two men aged 16 and 21 were also taken to Westmead Hospital and were said to be in serious condition. The four other victims - two 16-year-old boys, a 17-year-old boy, and an 18-year-old woman - were all taken to Royal North Shore Hospital in stable condition.

"Police from Ryde Local Area Command attended and established a crime scene, which will be examined by forensic specialists," NSW Police said in a press statement.

Police did not specify whether all of the stabbings were carried out by one person or if multiple suspects were involved. "Detectives are speaking to witnesses. No arrests have been made at this stage," the statement added.
