Passenger ferry carrying 512 people catches fire off Puero RIco

A passenger ferry carrying more than 500 people caught fire off Puerto Rico's capital city San Juan on Wednesday, officials and witnesses say, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

"Caribbean Fantasy", a passenger/car ferry owned by America Cruise Ferries, caught fire about 1 mile (1.6 kilometer) off San Juan during a 12-hour trip from Santo Domingo, which is the capital of the Dominican Republic, to San Juan.

A video posted on social media showed dozens of people on the top deck of the ferry as rescue boats arrived to start the evacuation. Aerial photos released by Puerto Rico Police showed light, black smoke coming from two sections of the ferry.

"The fire reportedly began in the engine room of the ship and is spreading to other compartments on board," the U.S. Coast Guard said in a news release. "Passengers are being evacuated off the ship and taken to Pier 6 in San Juan port."

The U.S. Coast Guard said a total of 512 passengers and crew members were reported to be on board the ship when the fire broke out on early Wednesday morning. All passengers were evacuated by 11 a.m. local time and crews then evacuated the remaining 26 crew members.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.
