Gunman detained after shooting outside U.S. Embassy in Ankara

Shots have been fired outside the U.S. Embassy in Ankara and a man who attempted to enter the compound has been taken into custody, Turkish media report. Only few details were immediately available.

The incident happened at about 3:55 a.m. local time on Tuesday when residents in the area of the U.S. Embassy reported hearing what sounded like gunfire, though it was not immediately clear who fired the shots or what was the target.

Turkish media reported that an armed had fired at least 8 shots into the air before he was taken into custody by officers guarding the embassy's security checkpoint. "I swear to God, do not play with us," the suspect allegedly shouted, according to CNN Turk.

There were no reports of injuries.

Turkish media reported that the man had tried to enter the embassy compound, though there was no immediate comment from Turkish authorities. Details about a possible motive for the incident were not immediately available.

The incident comes less than 12 hours after Russian Ambassador Andrey Karlov was assassinated by a gunman while speaking at an art exhibition in Ankara. The assassination happened just a short distance from the U.S. Embassy.
