Sam Simon Estate Announces the Formation of The Sam Simon Charitable Giving Foundation

May 30, 2017 - (Newswire)

- The estate of long time animal lover and philanthropist, Sam Simon, today announced the formation of The Sam Simon Charitable Giving Foundation and a $1 million grant to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Best known as the co-creator of The Simpsons, Simon was also an outspoken opponent of the mistreatment of animals, and he was committed to serving underprivileged communities by providing access to the resources and opportunities that individuals need to reach their full potential. Simon's foundation will fund efforts to improve the treatment and welfare of animals, prioritizing support for animals in captivity. The foundation will also support programs that provide pathways out of poverty by increasing access to education and employment in underserved communities in the Los Angeles region.

"Sam was deeply committed to philanthropy throughout his lifetime, and his legacy of giving lives on through the Foundation's work championing both human and animal rights," said Julie Miller of the Sam Simon Charitable Giving Foundation.

PETA added, "Knowing that the Sam Simon Charitable Giving Foundation has committed to supporting our work for animals and their guardians reminds us of Sam's generosity and allows us to make Sam's wishes keep coming true far into the future."

The $1 million grant will be used for programs Sam supported during his lifetime. Funding will support PETA's work to build empathy for animals through educational exhibits targeted towards young adults and children; the Sam Simon Animal Rescue Fund, an initiative responsible for quickly transporting a variety of animals from unsafe and cruel environments and placing them in sanctuaries, homes, or other shelters; cruelty investigations, which will focus on the entertainment industry and animal agriculture; and lastly the Sam Simon Investigations and Rescue Matching Challenge, an online fundraising initiative to generate new donors to PETA.

About PETA

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is the largest animal rights organization in the world, with more than 6.5 million members and supporters.

PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: in the food industry, in the clothing trade, in laboratories, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of rodents, birds, and other animals who are often considered "pests", as well as cruelty to domesticated animals.

PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns.

PETA's unique campaigns have brought about a steady stream of victories for animals. Among our historic achievements in just the last several years are the largest fine for Animal Welfare Act (AWA) violations by a circus in U.S. history, the first-ever convictions of factory-farm employees for abusing pigs, the first-ever felony cruelty-to-animals charges for abusing birds, ending a decades-long illegal and secretive government permitting scheme, obtaining the largest seizure of animals in history from a notorious exotic-animal dealer, the closing of laboratories and animal-dealer enterprises, the first court-ordered seizure of a bear from a roadside zoo, and litigating the first case ever to seek U.S. constitutional protections for animals.

PETA has rescued many sensitive individuals from daily misery and provided them with loving care that meets their psychological and physical needs. For instance, over the past four years, PETA has rescued 57 bears and 7 formerly solitary chimpanzees from dismal entertainment facilities. We also saved five Thoroughbred horses from slaughter after they were abused in the racing industry.
