U.S. Rep. Scalise remains in critical condition after shooting

U.S. House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, the Republican congressman who was shot in Virginia while playing baseball with colleagues, remained in a critical condition on late Wednesday evening, medical officials said. He will also require additional operations.

Scalise suffered a single shot to the left hip when a man - who had expressed a resentment against Republican lawmakers - opened fire during a congressional baseball game in Alexandria, Virginia. His injuries were initially thought to be non-life threatening but the hospital later said Scalise is in a critical condition.

"The bullet travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding. He was transported in shock to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, a Level I Trauma Center," the hospital said in a statement. "He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding."

MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Scalise has received multiple units of blood transfusion but his condition remained critical on late Wednesday evening. "He will require additional operations," the statement added. It did not specify whether the injuries are life-threatening.

The update came after President Donald Trump and his wife Melania visited the D.C. hospital, where they met with Scalise's wife Jennifer. "He entered the room, spoke with Scalise’s family, and sat by his bedside with Mrs. Trump," White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said, adding that Trump also met with the congressman's doctors.
