Gunmen open fire outside mosque in Avignon, injuring 8

Two gunmen opened fire as worshippers were leaving a mosque in the city of Avignon in southeastern France, injuring at least eight people, local media report. There is no indication of a link to terrorism.

The shooting happened at about 10:30 p.m. local time on Sunday when a vehicle carrying two hooded men stopped in front of the Arrahma mosque in Avignon. The men then opened fire as worshippers were leaving the mosque.

The French newspaper La Provence reported that at least eight people had been injured, including four people outside the mosque. Four other people, including a 7-year-old girl, suffered minor injuries when gunfire hit their apartment.

None of the victims are believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

The suspects, who were said to be armed with a handgun and a rifle, fled the scene before police officers arrived. The prosecutor's office told La Provence that the shooting is not believed to be linked to terrorism, pointing instead to a dispute between young people as the likely motive.
