Yahoo says 2013 data breach affected all 3 billion users

Yahoo said on Tuesday that a cyber breach in August 2013 affected all of its 3 billion users, not 1 billion as was previously reported. The breach affected names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, hashed passwords, and in some cases security questions and answers.

"Subsequent to Yahoo’s acquisition by Verizon, and during integration, the company recently obtained new intelligence and now believes, following an investigation with the assistance of outside forensic experts, that all Yahoo user accounts were affected by the August 2013 theft," the company said in a statement.

The statement said Yahoo would notify all of its users by email. It added that Yahoo had already required all of its users to change their passwords and security questions and answers when it disclosed the breach in December 2016.
