U.S. Senator Rand Paul assaulted at Kentucky home

U.S. Senator Rand Paul was attacked at his home in Kentucky on Friday, causing minor injuries, local officials say. A 59-year-old man was taken into custody and charged with assault.

The incident happened at about 3:21 p.m. CT on Friday when state police troopers were called for a report of an assault at Paul's residence in Bowling Green. Upon their arrival, troopers determined that Paul had been "intentionally assaulted," causing a minor injury.

"Senator Rand Paul was blindsided and the victim of an assault. The assailant was arrested, and it is now a matter for the police," a spokesperson for Paul said in a brief statement, adding that the senator is "fine." Details about the injury he sustained were not immediately available.

Kentucky State Police said Rene Boucher, a 59-year-old resident of Bowling Green, was later arrested and charged with one count of assault in the 4th degree. He was taken to the Warren County Detention Center and is due to appear in court on Thursday.

It was not immediately known whether Paul and Boucher knew each other or whether the alleged assault was politically-motivated.
